This week we were introduced to text wrapping and typesetting for a fiction text.

We were given a text and a brief including font, size and TPS to follow and we went through it in our own time. We went through a paper copy of the text which had been merked up with amendments and we were to make the changed in the InDesign document. I appreciated this task as it felt like a job that would be carried out in a typesetting role. This was challenging though as it meant thinking back to Jess’ lessons on copyediting; a lot of the symbols looked familiar but I couldn’t remember what they mean!

After making the amendments I went through formatting the text and it started to take shape and look much neater. I added folios and headers to the master page in the correct font too. We were provided with two images to add to the text, and were required to wrap the text according to the desired effect. It was fun to do this and although there was only a small amount of text, and only two images, everyone in the class produced a slightly different version and it was interesting to hear everyone elses thought processes.

I finished this task before the end of the lesson so got on with the final task which was the first two pages of a chapter book with a number of space-related pictures. There was a bit more free rein involved with this task and I found myself zoning out and playing around with different positioning of text. I changed the font to a hand-written style font too which looked more playful and fun, reflecting children’s books that are currently on the market.
